With their focus on being an adventure vehicle for outdoor lovers, there has been a lot of attention to Rivian when it comes to their design, batteries, and accessories.
But one area that doesn’t get as much attention is the staggering performance numbers Rivian claims the R1S and R1T can reach.
Thanks to an electric motor at each wheel, Rivian claims the R1S can go from 0-60mph in under 3 seconds and less than 7 seconds to reach 100mph with the 135kWh battery. In terms of horsepower/torque numbers it depends on which battery pack you purchase.
The 105kWh battery with 240 miles of range produces 402 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque.
The 135kWh battery with 310 miles of range produces 753 horsepower and 826 lb-ft of torque.
The big 180 kWh battery with 410 miles of range produces 700 horsepower and 826 lb-ft of torque.
The R1T has the same motor setup as the R1S and Rivian claims it can put up similar numbers, which is absolutely scary for a pickup truck. The R1T is expected to reach 60mph in 3.0 seconds and less than 7 seconds to reach 100mph with the 135 kWh battery.

Both vehicles will be limited to a top speed of 125 mph.
Rivian hasn’t shown us what the R1S and R1T can do but if their claim is true it puts both vehicles in some elite company.
For SUVs/trucks the only comparison is the Tesla Model X. In 2016 a Tesla Model XP100D was recorded going 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. Which is right where Rivian claims to be.
For electric here are some other 0-60 times that Tesla has posted:
- 2016 Tesla Model S P100D - 2.28 seconds
- 2019 Model S - 2.4 seconds
- 2015 Tesla Model S P85D - 2.8 seconds
- 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance - 3.2 seconds
