I wanted a bike mount system that allowed me pull the truck into the garage - or underground parking - with the bike in the rack. I also don’t want to use a hitch rack because we live on a dirt road - I own a hitch rack now and they’re great but if you have to travel on dirt the bike gets filthy. I also don’t like driving around with the hitch rack on the vehicle and they’re a PIA to take on and off - for me at least.

The Built Right frame mounts to the existing bolts in the bed - super slick and easy install - and then I mounted 2 RockyMounts Droptop that accommodate thru-axles as well as quick releases. The RockyMounts also lock unlike something the 1UP - which is beautifully made but put the bike up too high for me.

With one bike I can close the tail gate - with two bikes I will leave the tail gate down.

The Builtright molle style attachment design allows lots of other attachment options.

The price of the ‘frame’ and the two mounts was about equal to two 1UP or Yakima racks.

I will also say that the Builtright guys provided great customer service as did RockyMounts.

Edit: By placing the second fork mount about 5-6” to the left of the one in the pic I can get two bike in the bed with the tailgate closed by angling them. I also put the second fork mount a few inches higher so that the handlebars were ‘staggered’.

I considered this approach (and several others) as well but ultimately went with the RaceFace tailgate pad. The biggest reason is that I didn't want to have to drive with the tailgate open when ore than 1 bike is loaded. The downside to the tailgate pad approach is that plastic tailgate "gap flap" that interferes with the tailgate pad when closing the tailgate, if you happened to open it for some reason. I'm currently leaning toward removing that plastic gap flap as I think it is only aesthetic and has no other real function.

I finished the install and determined that if I mount the other Rockymounts fork mount several inches to the left of the one in the pic I can get two Mtn bikes angled in the bed with the gate closed.

Have you figured out what range loss you have with the bikes in the bed mounted with the Built Right mounts? I have been considering the same option, but always assumed I would need to leave the tailgate down. Thanks.

I’d think that having the bikes tucked in behind the cab would be better than the alternative but honestly it doesn’t matter because 1) range isn’t really an issue for me, and 2) transporting bikes is a not an option for me. I’m very happy with the range performance of the R1T and public charging - when I need it - is readily available in the Colorado mountain corridor.
