Best Tires for the Rivian R1T & R1S from Tire Rack

Jump to Latest
NorthernRivian
Automotive tire Font Tread Screenshot Rim
Tire Rack has a selection of tires for the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV for all wheel sizes.
Has anyone taken a look at what they list?

Not the most knowledgeable on tires but down the road I might have to consider getting something suitable for winter (which they don't seem to list yet)

Options are fairly dismal. It was stupid to offer a 21” or 22”. They should have done a 18” as their standard and AT tire rim and 20” on street tires for those that like the look of large rims and don’t care to diminish the performance for perceived aesthetics.

Do you want a truck that does 0-60 MPH in 3.1 seconds????. Well, then you need some big ass brakes to slow it down. Hence, why it has larger brakes than a Ford Raptor, which is able to get 18 inch wheels on them. Sacrifices have to be made for some of the benefits you get. Wheel size seems like a pretty minor sacrifice for all that the Rivian is otherwise.

0-60 times has nothing to do with brake demand or stopping distance…. It takes the same amount of power to stop a truck from 60 mph that did 0-60 in 2 seconds vs one that did 0-60 in 12 seconds. If they were really concerned with the shortest stopping distances why did they go with relatively skinny 275’s?

Super duty trucks that weight 8-9k lbs and to can have payloads in the 18k lbs run 15” brake rotors.

Heck, F1 cars have <11” rotors.

I’d also make the argument that EVs with regen when compared to a similar ICE could get away with smaller brakes due to the additional brake force from regen. I almost never use much pressure on the conventional brakes in my Teslas, even in the winter when I have regen set to low.

Larger rims increase braking distance, increase acceleration rate, decrease ride compliance and are very detrimental off road.

There will be more performance detriments from larger rims then gained from larger brakes.

And you can put 17’s on f150 Raptors.

Agree with you Cole ... I'm getting the 20" rims and put street tires on them ... eating the cost of the ATs; possibly getting aftermarket rims that I'll put those AT tires on for desert (off)road trips.

The point being, it is considered a "high performance" vehicle. High performance vehicles generally have bigger brakes. Add that in with the 7,000+ weight of the thing and it needs good brakes. This is what Rivian felt they needed on the vehicle. Based on the size of the brakes, back to the original question, is why a minimum wheel size of 20" is necessary.

F1 Cars weigh under 1700lbs and have immense slick tires designed to last less than 90 miles.

Being able to accelerate a 7000lb truck in a short space to a higher speed than most vehicles (even sports cars) creates a need for big brakes. On roads with curves, this makes a big difference! On a short straight being able to accelerate to 90mph vs a super duty truck or normal SUV w/300hp that can only hit 60mph in the same stretch, this requires much more stopping power.

I read someplace that the R1T weights in at 7000lbs. I'm assuming the R1S is similar. With the 4 motors, does anyone else think these trucks will "eat" tires quickly?

If you drive it like you stole it, yes. If you drive conservative tires will go a while. My LX570 is built out and weighs ~6600 lbs and I tow a ~7k lb camper 15-20k miles a summer with it. I drive it like the big lumbering elephant it is but off road pretty hard, get ~30-40k miles out of D/E rated LT tires.

My wife had a cayenne turbo, she went through the first set of tires before the first oil change (no joke 8k miles). Had it for 4 years and went through 4 sets of tires.

LOL. Tire Rack is only showing what they have - there are plenty of great options.

I agree with most of you - the smart money is to order with "city" tires and order a pair of heavy duty rims with AT tires and switch out. Personally, I'll be running Nitto Ridge Grapplers (cousin to Toyo Open Country III). Both BLOW the Scorpion away on load ratings and sit atop most AT reviews. I've been running Ridge Grapplers for past 2 years and happy plus, they look tough as anything.

But, first and foremost, look at their 3,760 pound rating (and they weight 60.8 pounds) versus 2,760 pound rating (and 48 pound weight) for Pirelli! Hope this helps.

Stop the press! This changes everything! I thought it was 3 seconds! 3.1 is just not going to do it for me.

Go with the no charge rim set, then buy after market rims that you like in the size you want. I want 20" rims because the tires I want to put on it do not come in 21" and 21" tires are stupidly exspensive.

I spoke with someone from Rivian who said that you can’t use any tires on the R1T besides the three Pirelli options that come with it. I need really aggressive mud tires for navigating the difficult terrain on my property. Not sure the Scorpions are up to it.

They don’t know what they are talking about. Any tire with appropriate load rating will work. If you need tires that are more aggressive then the scorpions for the terrain you drive the (non practical) 20 inch rims will be your biggest limiting factor. I guess what I’m saying the OEM tires will not be your limiting factor for aggressive off roading it will be the low sidewall height due to the large 20” rims.

I’m waiting for someone to pull off the large brakes so it will fit 17” rims.

Probably because Rivian gets a cut. I just changed my tires to the matching tread patter Pirelli's. Same tire, but 275/60/20 instead of the stock 275/65/20. 33" vs 34" circumference. For the all-terrains, the stock all-terrains are too big for the truck. Aside from those that need tires for extreme off-roading, in my opinion, the 275/60/20's look better suited to the truck, handle better, offer better performance. No measurable difference in sound or range efficiency. Exact same tread pattern. The big difference is, the stock tires from Tire Rack are $394 and have a "Rivian" brand to them. The same tire, 275/60/20 instead, is $248 per tire. Basically $600 per set. Love the new tire so much better. The only place the 34" tire would "possibly" be better, is for very extreme off-road situations and if you're one that airs down the tires to go off-roading. Otherwise, the 33" tires are better in every way.

And, they don't have to be Pirelli's. Any tire with the correct load rating will work just fine.

Just read the last line of your post. Just FYI, I just had 285/60/20 mud-terrain tires on my truck with custom 18" offset wheels. LOVE the look of them, but the mud-terrains are certainly louder, so I went back to the Pirelli's, but in the smaller size.

The 285/60/20 to me was a great fitment. 33 1/2" circumference, fit the fender wells better than the stock 34" tires, a hair wider with a more muscular stance. Again, loved the look of the tires. Just wasn't a fan of the noise. If anyone has an interest in these tires. I'm putting them on craiglist. They were on the truck for a week and have less than 100 miles.

Interesting... So, when Rivian says you can’t use other tires besides their three stock options, they are lying? Will they refuse to repair/honor warranties if you use something else?

Obviously you can put almost anything on anything... My concern was whether their onboard computer can only calibrate accurately with their stock options.

@kizamybute', what wheels did you go with? I like your tire choice but I’ll need a set of wheels to replace the stock 21s. They will just be for winter use, so I don’t care so much how they look as they will handle the weight of the truck and don’t stick out too far.

I don’t think they are lying just call line/delivery specialists are not knowledgeable.

In terms of warranty, I don’t see how putting on tires/wheels that are similar specs would effect warranty. But putting on one that are am drastically different could. Most car/truck brands deny drivetrain warranty claims when people put on (meaningful) different offfset rims, especially ones that “poke” out as it changes the suspension/brake/driveline dynamics and stress points. Also plus sized tires, the Tacoma forums have a lot of info on Toyota not replacing drivelines/bearings for people on >33-34” tires

The photos shown are a 20x9 with 18mm offset. That appears to be the limit on offset. Tried a 20mm offset wheel and it barely rubbed the calipers. There are other options, but appears many may be custom and start getting into custom made wheels which get pricey.

These tires would fit on a stock wheel just fine. 1/2 inch less diameter, so you'd have more clearance than with the stock tires. So if you can find a set of stock 20" wheels on E-bay, craiglist or somewhere else, those would work too. If you go with a custom wheel, don't go over an 18mm offset (meaning lower number as lower number pushes out the wheels more). If it has a lower offset than 18mm (higher number), then need to see if they'll clear the calipers.

There are some posts of people having custom wheels made with smaller offsets, but I think they were in the $6,000 per set range. The wheels I have are in the $1,200 per set range.
