Does anyone know if the R1T's gear tunnel can be accessed through the rear seat's arm rest? I saw this photo of the arm rest and I'm not sure if this panel actually opens or not.
There is confirmation on another forum from someone that was in the vehicle a couple of weeks ago at the hosted event for a handful of preorder holders that there is a pass through. While I cannot say with 100% absolute certainty, I am fairly confident the answer would be "no". First off, the gear tunnel is a separate area past the cab and not really touching the cab via body-in-white pictures.

Plus there is two 110V outlets within the tunnel and it is supposed to be sealed off from the elements too.
So all my knowledge on this matter would lead me to think this is like the frunk, a complete separate storage area.
Ugh, that'd be disappointing. I was sad to see the fabric-lining in the frunk get axed, along with the grocery hooks. Those may seem like small items, but I was really excited about them. I'll be equally sad if the hooks and carpet are axed in the gear tunnel.^ that has me wondering if there's more to the cuts in the fabric lining the gear tunnel towards the rear passenger area. It could be where the opening is. I just hope it's big enough to be truly useful and not limited to water bottles, etc.
Probably not as I assume they're building it for durability and to be capable of wet items. I believe it has a drain plug to double as an ice chest. So not likely the frunk will have carpet. The tunnel, my guess would be the same as it appears to be designed for surf boards and such. Cleaning sand out of carpet isn't fun.Ugh, that'd be disappointing. I hope against all odds that the production R1Ts add back the carpeted frunk and grocery hooks. Even if it's a paid accessory/upgrade I'd do it. I want them! I'd use them all the time when shopping.
I've definitely not going to be drilling holes willy-nilly.But there's good news.......Hooks with a couple of screws are available all day on Amazon. Just need a screw driver. And a roll of trunk style carpet I'm sure exists on there to that could be easily installed for just a few bucks. I too would rather have them carpeted for my use. But, not likely as they want to appeal to the majority.
In my head i had the spare wheel hole in the bed as the suggested ice chest. What if you have........a spare tire in the "wheel hole"??In my head i had the spare wheel hole in the bed as the suggested ice chest. I guess you sometimes need a lot of ice!
The ring kits that are sold include instructions on how to install. The screws are quite short. It's a simple add-on feature. Plus, as with most cars, the plastic pieces should easily snap in and out, so if you're worried about it, should be able to easily pull the plastic piece back to see what's behind the location where you want to install the hooks. It really is a pretty simple process. But, if you're not the DIY type, likely could have any stereo installation type of shop put them in for you in a few minutes. Just simply pointing out that, if Rivian doesn't include them, there's a fairly simple fix for it. I would imagine that, while there may not be carpeting, there will still be tie-down hooks/rings in the frunk. Pretty much standard and most cars today. So probably won't be an issue anyway.I've definitely not going to be drilling holes willy-nilly.
Just stating from the facts I'm currently privy to. From Sizing up the R1T - Rivian Stories:What if you have........a spare tire in the "wheel hole"??![]()
I’m a fairly advanced DIYer…. But I don’t like doing modifications that look cheap/crappy, and what you describe certainly sounds cheap/crappy to me.The ring kits that are sold include instructions on how to install. Yes, I suppose I could finally have enough of an excuse to buy that 3D printer... Maybe there will be a burgeoning market for Rivian accessories. You could also buy a grocery organizer for 30 bucks and be done with it if Rivian doesn't have a built-in system. Those organizers can serve double duty and store all kinds of stuff when not hauling around milk + bread. I will often just have a cooler in my truck and use that for similar duty (for cold and frozen stuff anyway).
Yes, but none of these photos show a doorway to the gear tunnel actually OPEN. I think the Inside Evs article may be incorrect.Just found this....

Rivian R1T's Gear Tunnel Is Accessible From Inside The Cabin
If Rivian's unique gear tunnel storage area wasn't enough, now we learn that you can get at it from the R1T electric truck's rear seats.insideevs.com
It says it was based on the recent event in which drivers confirmed that you could access it. One said they lost photos of it open, but confirmed that it did open with an accordion style slide open door. Obviously we won't know for 100% sure until deliveries being, but sure sounds like it is an option. Given, if it's just the space where the pull down armrest is located, it's going to be a pretty small opening. So not sure how much practicality it will have. I guess you could line up a cooler with opening and reach through to grab a drink from the ice chest?Yes, but none of these photos show a doorway to the gear tunnel actually OPEN. Yeah, hopefully that's right. More options are better than none. I personally wouldn’t start drilling without some serious conversations with a Rivian engineer first! We have no idea what’s on the other side of the area to be drilled— where does the tonneau store, and how close to the gear tunnel wall, for example… And, how would it compromise any rust proofing? Could potentially hit something important, even with a self tapping screw. IMO, it would be better to come up with a different solution for the missing hooks.Probably not as I assume they're building it for durability and to be capable of wet items.
