Everyone else is as of this moment, but I expect Rivian to make an announcement that they are switching by the end of summer, and probably much sooner.
They can’t make this announcement yet unless they can retrofit the NACS charging connector onto CCS vehicles. Who will buy a Rivian with a CCS connector in their right mind if the NACS-equipped ones are about to ship?Everyone else is as of this moment, but I expect Rivian to make an announcement that they are switching by the end of summer, and probably much sooner.
Exactly! I'm in my right mind (at least I think so) and I'm on the verge of buying a Rivian and I'll betcha it'll have a CCS charging port. So, what do I do? Lose my mind or wait for the announcement? They can’t make this announcement yet unless they can retrofit the NACS charging connector onto CCS vehicles. Ford has non-EV vehicles they can sell. Rivian doesn’t. And announcement like this could be a major issue for Rivian.Ford doesn't plan to offer a retrofit for built vehicles from what I have read. They will offer an adapter, and eventually all new vehicles from 2025 and beyond will have the Tesla (NACS) port.
You're right this could be a problem. I think if we received similar announcements from Kia & Hyundai, Mercedes, BMW and Chevrolet, as well as EVSE providers we could see a rather unfortunate outcome for current non-tesla EV owners.Ford has non-EV vehicles they can sell. There need to be NACS retrofits done on existing EVs. Not so many CCS1 EVs have been sold in the US that would make it a daunting task. You're right this could be a problem. I am betting on the stop gap of an adapter and API integration solving any issues with NACS and CCS formfactors going forward.
I do not think retrofits are the answer. It would be nice for simplicity if only one port was utilized on non-commercial EVs. RAN, EA, CP, EVgo, etc are all primarily CCS networks. The multitude of other actual EV manufacturers, sorry Aptera, use CCS.There need to be NACS retrofits done on existing EVs. Probably just seems that way since so many ccs chargers are out of service at any given time! 😬I don’t believe these stats. No way there are more CCS chargers than Tesla ones.
