How long are you going to keep your Rivian?

For me it will be before the 5 years or 60k miles is up.

Maybe sooner, depends on what shiny new objects come out.

How about everybody else?

I love my R1T. I’ve had it for a year, driven 12k essentially problem free miles, my Rivian rep is responsive, service has been good (although I’ve only had one issue requiring keeping my truck for a few days) and communication and tech support has been great. I’m thrilled to be on the leading edge of something truly unique and exciting and am more than willing to tolerate a few mysteries and shoulder shrugs along the way. Sometimes the truck has a mind of its own or doesn’t do something I think it should, but then I spend a day crawling over rocksbeing shot into hyperspace or answering question from fascinated people and any frustration evaporates.
People love to complain. Much more than they are likely to report positive experiences. I think this amazing vehicle/company has an incredible future and the R1T is loved by the vast majority of those who are lucky enough to wake up to one in their driveway. They’re just too busy out having fun to sit home and write ranting reviews. KW

Just wanted to chime in, VIN ~63XX here. Coming up on one year since delivery, our experience thus far has been fantastic. Best vehicle I've ever driven. Crazy fast, capable off-road, and the software is miles better today than it was when we took delivery. We've had to take it in for service a few times, they have been awesome and super flexible. My one complaint would be the powered tonneau, which broke 2 weeks after delivery but it sounds like they'll hopefully have a replacement this summer.

Huh! Thanks for your reply, but it's left me in the usual quandary that I have been wrestling with -- to buy or not to buy. I've got a May/June delivery estimate so it's getting down to the wire. If I thought that I would have issues like you've had I'd likely bail and wait (who knows how long) for a better EV option. I really like the size of the R1T compared to the behemoth Lightning, Silverado, CT, Hummer.
On the other hand, for every bad experience like yours, I've read many glowing endorsements. Were you just unlucky and is it just a crap-shoot off of the Normal (pun intended) production line or are they all problematic and those other folks are just blowing sunshine up our asses?
Im in the same boat. Im getting my R1S in June. But I got in early, with early pricing. So my thought is I can always sell it without loosing money if I need to.

The same with me -- early price. Yes, that's one remedy if I get a lemon, but I'd have to unload it anonymously. I wouldn't sell a POS to anyone I know.
My opinion hasn’t changed since I took delivery last year. The R1T has the potential to be the best vehicle on the road for my needs…. But actually living with it, day to day, is incredibly frustrating. Rivian, as a company, is frustrating. Fit and finish is terrible. Tons of issues. Rattles. Clunks. Software issues. Every OTA introduces regressions. Service is THE WORST. Every visit is booked out weeks/months, they keep the vehicle for weeks, no loaners, and it gets returned with some issues not fixed (but they claim they did), other issues not fixed with them refusing to do so (within spec or some other b.s.), and every time it is returned with NEW issues including physical damage.

Most recently I went in for my driveline noise (significant tick/tock/clunk on acceleration/deceleration)…. We have evidence on the forums that Rivian is aware of the issue and has even released a tech bulletin for it…. I took a test ride with their senior tech and they immediately acknowledged the sounds and said “oh yeah, that’s bad.” The vehicle is subsequently given back to me with no improvements and SC says they can’t fix it. If it fails then they’ll warranty it, but they say they can’t make the noise any better. I have literally had neighbors approach me in my driveway and ask what’s wrong with the truck because they hear it as I come/go. It’s embarrassing.

Rivian cares more about shipping new units than they do about taking care of existing customers or their long term reputation.
Wow, totally different than my experience. I've had mine since Oct of 2022. Sounds like a completely different company/product than what I've experienced. Sorry you're going through all that.

Amazing ethics.👍

Sorry to hear about your R1T problems. I have had mine since December and it has performed perfectly. Fit and finish is perfect. Performs like a sports car (if not better) and gets easily 300 miles of range if driven in Conserve mode and not exceeding 65 mph. I hope Rivian will be more responsive to your complaints.
My VIN is in the early 6,000's and while I have had a few issues, Rivian has always addressed them. Sure, waiting 5 weeks for a mobile tech visit can be frustrating, but they do eventually show up and do the work. I love my R1T and would buy it again. My only lingering gripe is the lack of Apple Car Play and/or SiriusXM.

Ugh....these posts are tedious....

Sorry you're having issues but as several others have written, no problems with my R1T whatsoever. Definitely no "clunks" or "rattles." In fact, mine feels as solid as a tank (that goes 0 - 60 in 3 seconds!). I've had like 2 software issues in over a year of ownership that were easily cleared up with great service.

I would go talk to somebody else at Rivian - based on my overwhelmingly positive (albeit limited) interactions, it's hard to fathom they'd just throw up their hands and leave you hanging.

Not specific to you in particular but in regards to the plethora of negative, "complainy" posts - a 1st gen vehicle of ANY KIND isn't going to be 100% perfect in every way. Frankly, if anyone expects that, they're not too bright. I know 5 people personally with Rivian's (4 R1T's and 1 R1S) and everyone loves them...nobody is talking about any of these issues.

I feel like some of these people should look at what the Rivian IS vs what it ISN'T....they might see it's pretty damn amazing.

Or maybe they should just buy an ICE vehicle or a Tesla...I'm sure that will be a 100% perfect experience for them! Nothing will ever go wrong and there won't be any headaches or issues.

I know I've NEVER had a single mechanical or service issue with ANY of the ICE vehicles I've owned.

For what it's worth...I've had mine for over a year and now meet at least a couple dozen other Rivian owners. It's been all love and positive reviews. Is it perfect? No...there are a couple things I'd change. But I could say that about every vehicle I've ever owned.

Not saying this guy is lying...but I've only encountered the negative stories online...mostly in this forum.
I have been waiting 3+ years. I will keep it at least that long. Part of me thinks that I may keep it longer because I like the look, I will like the speed and I like the heaviness. It just keeps my family safer if there is an accident. So, I would like to say 10 years. Speaking of tech, my MME has had no issues in close to two years. Technologically, it doesn’t feel like it is two years old but brand new. I think having Apple Play also adds to the newness feeling. It looks brand new too. So, if our first EV is a sign of things to come, I should be good for a decade.
Let me tell you about heaviness...I backed into a Jeep Cherokee. Yes, the Rivian beeped and dinged warning me what was about to happen but I was distracted upon just hearing about the death of a family friends child and the Cherokee was in my driveway where there isn't usually a car.

The rear quarter panel on the Rivian got slightly dented - the Cherokee looked like it had been hit by a Sherman tank. It crumpled like it was made of generic tin foil.
Just want to say my experience is totally different. No real problems. Fit and finish is A+.

Hey! My buddy asked for my thoughts and I figured I’d make this my first post. I ordered my forest green R1S 10/24/21, took delivery 2/23/23. I had a model Y before and that was an awesome car, too. Smaller but not so much as to be less comfortable for my size (6’1” 250#), it was more right sized for my daily use, but trips with the kids and gear would get cramped, bikes on the back killed efficiency and ski days tight enough to make us take the wife’s Honda Pilot.

I love the truck for all of its capabilities and size is perfect for the family and any recreation I get into ( camping, mtbiking, skiing). I had an 08 4Runner before the Y and the Rivian is a perfect mashup of the Y and 4Runner. The y wasn’t big enough, the Toyota was a dinosaur.

Hard to say given how long I’ll keep it given How much the tech is changing. I actually worry less about the Teslas than the Rivian past warranty simply for the inclusion of the adjustable suspension, I’ve already had a sensor give off a warning that stopped the truck from changing modes. Mobile service messed with it for a while but recommended it go in to the service center. Hasn’t given warning in the week since but I expect I’ll make that call soon.

My brother has a 2012 Tesla S and while there have been updates past his car’s capabilities. It is still performing as well as it ever had and higher miles is not as significant a factor in wear on these EVs as it is on ICE vehicles.

So unless some other remarkable tech revolution rears it’s head or this truck proves itself to be of the lemon variety, I could see keeping it for 10-15 years easy.

Isn't there a 7-day/1k mile return policy? I am looking forward to getting my R1S but if I see major issues, I plan to return in within that time period.

Sorry for your loss. Glad you and the Rivian are good. Hopefully, the Cherokee owner isn’t too upset.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to you friend. Nothing can assuage the pain of losing a child. I know.

You missed the subtle point. I said laptop on wheels, not a desktop PC with bunch of PCI slots and a swappable motherboard. Yes I was born and even remember coding FORTRAN using cards on CDC mainframe and playing with 5-1/2" floppy KayPro and other early PCs.

Anything, as I stated, can be upgraded if you spend enough money on it. Look at all the classic cars being converted to EVs. All I'm saying is that unless one is in love with the vehicle and believe it will be worthwhile value proposition, it's simply better to replace. Just like laptops and tablets today.

I do not repair laptops, smartphones, tablets, small appliances, kitchen and laundry appliances, TV or home theater equipment. When they break, I replace with new/current. Vehicles are bit pricey to do that so somethings I will repair. If repair is too costly, then it too will get replaced with new. You probably figured that never bother with extended warrantees, right - why bother.

The only exception would be for collectables. Thus far, I do not believe R1T or S as such - even the LE. I may be wrong someday, and if so, so be it. Congrats to those that held on and kept it in great shape.
I'm in year 8 with a very early (VIN <1000) Tesla Model X P90D, delivered in March 2016. Battery is still 92% of original, and it drives and works great. In early 2021 I upgraded the CPU, center screen and radio electronics for $2000, which greatly accelerated the GPS route calcs and screen response, and enabled some new functions like video streaming. It was definitely worth it, and extended the car's useful life by years. Due to camera limitations the CPU upgrade did not enable "Full Self Driving" or even dashcam capability, but I got a good dashcam for a few hundred bucks, which I can transfer to another car in future. I will keep the X until I get my R1S, hopefully late this year or early next. Assuming I'm happy with it, I will keep the R1S for a long time.

Many purely electronic items are difficult to upgrade or fix, e.g. tablets, laptops, TVs. I've passed some down to my kids for their home or dorm use, or donated if they were in good shape. And thanks to Youtube and lots of helpful online parts suppliers, I have fixed multiple dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers - even an electric water heater. It's satisfying to know that I fixed it myself, and that I extended the life of something that took a lot of energy to create. This is good practice even if recycling is possible - and far better than sending things to a landfill.

For the sake of our environment we (starting with manufacturers) need to do what we can to extend the lives of the products we use. We do not have limitless resources, energy, or ability to absorb CO2 without adverse consequences.
