John Goodenough, the co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery has filed a patent for a battery made with glass. His team claims that the battery will have more energy storage capacity than a lithium-ion battery without being volatile.
Here's the link to the full patent. It's a fascinating read, though a lot of it goes over my head.
