We’ve been wondering, where the extra 1000 lb (?) of batteries will go.
The $10,000 option that will add another 83 miles.
Some critics are thinking they will be eating up some storage or occupant space, others say the extra weight will incur diminishing return as the extra weight will suck range , and then there’s that effect on handling and performance.

While I don't know where the extra cells for the Max Pack will go, for the R1T at least, there appears to be room enough somewhere along the undercarriage in the skateboard chassis. The cabin for the R1T LR and the Max seem to be identical. This is not the case for the R1S however.

It looks like Rivian is having difficulty determining an arrangement for a larger battery pack for the R1S, likely because the third row intrudes too far into the skateboard to allow the same placement as in the R1T. As far as I know, Rivian has never made an official announcement that there will be no R1S Max, but all the language about a Max Pack was removed from the R1S webpage around the time the configurator went live.

If you phone CS and ask about the R1S Max, the rep will respond with some version of "we're working hard on a longer-range battery pack for the R1S and hope to provide more information about it in the near future." If you continue to press, you will likely be told that they no longer use "Max" as the term for the larger battery pack and they use "longer-range" because the new pack will not have the same capacity as the Max does. It's not clear that a "longer range" R1S will even be offered, perhaps again because the cabin of the SUV does provide sufficient room to add a reasonable number of additional cells to the battery pack.

Until we see photos of the skateboard before the marriage, there is no way to know how much space there really is.

I would love 400+mile range but it is not a deal-breaker. Someone will come up with a schlep-along power bank capable of providing 30 extra miles and capable of being connected to the skateboard, disconnecting a like-number of cells.

Another alternative is a home-swappable 3rd row/battery pak, where you can remove the 3rd row and replace it with a range extender for long trips. Not something most would do
