Maybe someone will learn from my experience…..

Last Sunday was a beautiful day, I decided to go “off roading” in the Ochoco National Forest which is near home. My R1T had never been off paved roads and it was time to explore all the gravel Forest Service roads….. My exploration was going fine until about 28 miles in I heard a loud pop – there was no doubt that the right rear tire had a blowout – not a leak but a 1 inch hole in the center of the tread! I took delivery last December, before Rivian was shipping with spare tires, so no spare! I did have the Rivian tire repair kit which I figured would be no match for the hole but what the heck. As long as the hold was down towards the ground the tire held pressure – move forward a bit to expose the hole – flat tire again. Time to call for help BUT there was no cell service on my dual SIM iPhone – none from AT&T and none from T-Mobile – nothing. Sooo, I decided to try the iPhone satellite SOS feature – guess what? It worked great! They called my situation into the Crook County Sherriff and I asked that they also call my wife and let her know I was going to be way late but was OK. I was told to expect a 3 hour wait… so far so good, but the temperature was now 97 degrees and climbing. Wonder how much power the AC takes – turns out about 1.5% for 2 hours at 97 degrees. GREAT I was good for 30 hours or so :) The sun was streaming in the front windshield so I moved to the back seat to wait and contemplate life. After a while I looked up, and immediately above my head was a crack in the glass roof that I had never noticed – probably not from this adventure but something more that had to be delt with later. My new best friend, Sargent Steve from the Sheriff’s department arrived about 4 hours after this adventure started. Fortunately Steve spoke LAT / LON, as did I, because that was the only way to find me, so many miles off of the grid. Got a 1.5 hour ride back to town, hired a flatbed truck to go get my R1T. Steve hand drew a map for the flatbed drive who did not speak LAT / LON. The rest of the story – my truck was hauled to Les Schwab in Prineville late Sunday night. $550 got me a new tire installed two days later – had to be shipped from Portland. I have a Service Center appointment in Portland on OCOTBER 2nd to replace my wheels and tires with the 20 inch off road combo, add a spare tire with kit, and replace my glass roof – estimate $7,900. Lessons learned, carry a spare, know how to use the SOS on your iPhone, and I love my truck!!!

Great write up! I travel the Ochocos in my R1T and it always concerns me because much of it is VERY remote and services, cell phone reception, and just people are few and far between.
Where in the Ochocos did this occur? Did the sheriff consider your request for service an appropriate call? Not criticizing, just never called police or sheriff for vehicle service assistance and curious how they treat something like this. What towing service did you use ( for future reference)?

Mike - hopefully this screenshot will help you identify the spot. Sgt Steve was VERY supportive - given the temperature and the remote location - at 73 years old hiking out would have been even more dangerous. He recommended Star towing and I was VERY happy with their can do attitude. They even called me late Sunday night to advise the truck was safely at Les Schwab.

As to the question about letting air out of my tire - no I didn’t - should I have and why?

Glad it worked out in the end! You made a couple of rookie mistakes, which many of us have made. First, do heed the advice: "Never wheel alone." Always have a buddy car, if you're venturing where it may get iffy. And yeah, you need to air the tires down so that they don't get popped as easily, and so that you have more traction. I don't know the best setting for the R1 but it's probably more than 20 psi and less than 30 psi.

Sorry for the painful lesson, never fun! However, I took delivery August of last year and had a spare with spare kit. Was this just in your area that they wouldn't include it?
