To all my fellow R1S order holders,
For context: I ordered my R1S in February 2019 and live in San Diego (where Rivian has a local service center) and my selections match what is being prioritized for initial builds (confirmed by Rivian’s customer service). Before today’s email, my delivery was scheduled for Oct-Dec 2022.

Today’s email: My delivery is now scheduled for first half of 2023.

This is what is happening…

I reserved in October 2020. My delivery window moved from Oct-Dec 2022 to First half (not first quarter) of 2023. That means, I may not see mine until June 2023. Very disappointing. I don’t understand why they are not prioritizing R1S over R1T.

Same here.
Ordered January 2019. Adventure Package, El Cap, 20" AT tires. Seems pretty 'basic' IMO, but maybe not. Oh...and there's a service center near me.
It will be 4+ years from when I ordered. REALLY testing my patience right now...

Yep.... same here, 1st half 2023. Deposit July 2020 after holding off for a year. Original update window was June-July 2022. I'm only 1.5 hours from service center in Chicago, straight shot down I94 from Milwaukee suburbs. I REALLY feel for all the pre order holders that have been hanging on since the very early days, infuriating! I'm in need of a new vehicle and this is a gut punch. My build is very straight forward: R1S, LE, Launch Green, Black Mountain, 22's and roof rails with bike racks.

Rivian is in the process of transitioning to full-rate production (FEP) from low-rate production (LRIP). This is extremely difficult, much more so than most folks realize, and takes considerable time. Limiting the build to the one variant is an attempt by Rivian to get to stable production at at a higher rate that approaches FRP as quickly as possible. Adding other models slows that process significantly. It's a legitimate question to ask what that full production rate is. Is it 1,000 per month? 2,000? more? While I don't know what the answer is, I strongly suspect that the 2022 target of only 15,000 vehicles does not clear that threshold.

The added wait for R1S (and R1T Max) order holders is annoying, but given the degree of difficulty going from LRIP to FRP, it's pretty understandable. Once they do get to some reasonable R1T production rate, Rivian will slowly introduce variants such as the R1S and the R1T Max. Given that constraint, as well as the somewhat anemic production target referenced earlier, it should not be surprising if Rivian continues to prioritize R1T Adventure production and pushes R1S and R1T Max production even further right.

If it's any consolation, I put my deposit down in May of 2020 and still can't even configure the Rivian I want, the R1S Max. IMO, it's unlikely anyone will have an R1S with a larger battery pack in their driveway until sometime in 2024.

I wonder what this means for those of us who already had a 1H23 delivery estimate? Guess I can expect to receive an email pushing me back to 2H23...
To reference Yossarian's name and picture, it's a catch-22! We want to participate in the Rivian experience, but by the time our orders are ready to be fulfilled, there may be some pretty exciting alternatives that are also available from the world's leading manufacturers.

In the same boat - Dec 2018 reservation that was an estimated Oct-Dec 2022 delivery pushed to 1H23. Interesting to see those with non-OC interiors also being delayed. I assumed my OC config was the likely culprit.

At least the bank account is happy.

I have a basic build, El Cap, BM interior with a Jan 2019 rez and was pushed also to 1H23. Based on what Ive seen that will be 6/30/23, 4.5 years from rez. Lucky I dont drive much now during the pandemic and my Kia Niro has low mileage- she gonna be needed for another year.

I just got off the phone with my guide. I ordered 11/2018!! My estimated delivery window moved a few times and we finalized build for March-April 2022. April came and went and that's when my OC interior was supposedly the culprit. I reluctantly changed to BM recently in hopes of getting back to the top of the list.
Got the same sad email for 1st half of 2023.
My guide said only employees and executives will get R1S this year despite the emails that went out 2 weeks ago with updated windows of 2nd part of 2022.
I get that there will be hiccups. It's the canned responses and lack of transparency that irks me.

Super frustrating - losing patience. I paid my deposit for the R1S in January of 2020 and received the same notification - to wait another year. I've been driving a couple of old cars for a long time and need a new vehicle that looks a little more professional. At this point I will have to move forward with buying a different EV and will probably either cancel my order now or when I am told that they are ready to build.

Apparently Rivian's partnership with Ford and its efforts to employ former auto industry specialists has done little to help it figure out how to rapidly manufacture.

Time to start shopping around.

Order for my wife's R1S was October 2018. We did get our R1T a few months back so location and order date are not the issue. Yes it looks like they are holding off on the R1S deliveries for the rest of the year. I now have a very unhappy wife so will start shopping around for an alternative vehicle.

Welcome to the forum. What other new vehicles would you consider getting?

So NO deliveries of R1S this year to reservation holders—even after June 11 email update? My update was: Your Launch Edition R1S estimated delivery window is October - December 2022.

Just got my email too. My Adventure Package R1S is moved to first half 2023 as well. Previously was oct-dec 2022. Preorder was may 2019. It appears they basically delay R1S by another year to focus on R1Ts and even more recent orders than R1S preoders. I'm beginning to regret waiting so long, and may cancel my order and just buy gas engine suv. Even though gas prices have increased, so have electricity by even more, and PG&E grid cannot keep up with "demand" due to regulations....Arrrggg!!!
