Jonny Smith travelled to Germany to go off-roading in the Mercedes-Benz EQC 4x4². It is one serious machine


The EQC 400 4Matic 4x4² tech specs are:
  • Price: £70,665 (before £3k UK gov EV grant)
  • Battery: 80kWh Motors: 2 x 150kW (4x4)

  • Boot space: 500-litres
Modifications:

  • Steel armoured scuff guards front and rear
  • 30cm ride height increase over stock EQC
  • Fording depth and ground clearance increase of 15cm

  • Sound module inside and outside
  • Approach angle - 31.8 degrees (compared to 20.6)
  • Departure angle - 33 degrees (compared to 20)

  • Fording depth - 400mm (compared to 250mm)
  • 110 kW DC fast charging: 0-80% in 40 minutes
  • 50 kW charging: 0-80% in 90 minutes
  • 22 kW charging: 0-80% in 4 hours
  • 7 kW wall box: 0-100% in 13.5 hours
  • 3 kW home plug: 0-100% in 31 hours

I would love to see this done on the baby G-Wagon that's set to come out. To me the EQC has always been a family hauler and will be for most folks, but at least this version here is a good look at its capabilities.

I think this EQC is going to lay the groundwork for what Mercedes can/can't do with an electric G Wagon.

DO you mean make the baby G-wagon into a badass off-roader, or make it electric... or both?

Come to think of it, I think an electric G-Wagon could sell amazingly well.

I didn't expect Mercedes to make an off-road version of the EQC. I would've thought they'd just start with the G Class. Here's a more cinematic video that shows what the EQC can do.
