Rivian Files Patents For First-Responder Seats & Autonomous Vehicle Identifier

According to Forbes, Rivian has filed two new patent applications that give some hints towards the future.

The first patent application focuses on a new way to control autonomous vehicles. According to the article, "Rivian’s solution is to have the car identify who the user is and then, once the car determines if the driver is qualified to activate the feature or not, it then either activates (or not) that self-driving feature."

The second patent application is for a new type of seat that's designed for first responders who would use a Rivian as an emergency vehicle. According to the patent application “Conventional automotive seats typically include side portions both in the seat bottom and seat back that protrude relative to the main seating surfaces. ... The present inventors have observed that such conventional seating may be unduly constraining for first responders, such as law enforcement personnel, given the variety of gear that may be worn on the body of such a first responder, and the variety of gear that may occupy the front seat region of a first responder vehicle.”

I'm really curious as to what a Rivian first responder vehicle would actually look like. Would it be a modified R1S or R1T? Or a completely different design?

Here's an image of the proposed seat design.

Very interesting seat, I think I approve! (like anyone cares for my approval :p)

I think an R1S would make a great 1st responder vehicle.

I agree there's definitely potential for it as a first responders vehicle. I can also see them being used as vehicles for government agencies like the National Park Service.

It sure would although I bet it will take a long time to ween off F-150's. With so many produced it further justifies the cost of sticking with them. Initially these Rivian's will be few and far between. Still cool to see them out.
The seat design is great and it would definitely be cool to see Rivians as first responder vehicles, but I'm more curious about how Rivian's system is going to determine who's "qualified" to use activate autonomous driving.
