That would seem pretty bonkers to hire across the board after laying off 6% of their workforce just over 2 months ago.

A walk-in job fair at the factory is a useful way to recruit for factory jobs where you need factory workers who don't have to be relocated, but not so useful for many other jobs. Rivian has been constantly recruiting using a wide variety of methods appropriate to the job - this is just one of them.
