Rivian has started reaching out to people to schedule getting their wall chargers installed. Has anyone received a similar email?

Curious to hear if those who have configured their installation have any additional information on bidirectional charging.

You can request your own quote here: Rivian | Qmerit

I went through the process with my house and they quoted me $1800... No additional information about bi-directional charging. The price is not far off and doesn't include the price of permits/etc. The $1800 is similar to what others quoted me to install the Tesla HPWC earlier in the year so I just ended up doing it myself for $350 materials. Not too difficult but have to be careful about panel work, gauge, strain relief, etc. #RecoveringEngineer.

I personally would probably just buy an adaptor from my Tesla HPWC for the Rivian or install an outdoor weatherized 14-50 outlet for mobile charging. Running out of real-estate on my house and don't want to drop a bunch of cash/time until the bi-directional charging updates have been released.

EV newb here, so forgive my ignorance. I had a 220 outlet installed near my electrical panel in the garage. What will I need to do beyond this? I can plug and play with the included charger correct? To speed up the charging time though would I require a wall mounted Rivian charger and what does that install require if I already have the 220 outlet wired? Thanks

Also, anyone start receiving vehicles yet?

To clarify my understanding is the electrician installed a NEMA 14-50 outlet which gets me 50A? Ideal is 60A? but that would require hardwiring the Rivian wall charger to the circuit correct? I guess my question is since the NEMA 14-50 is already installed what would the cost be to have the Rivian wall charger installed (hard wired)? I think I read somewhere awhile back it was like $500 to do so?

Thanks

The Rivian mobile charger that connects to your NEMA 14-50 outlet limits charging rate to 30-32 amps (7.6 kW @ 240V), similar to Tesla mobile chargers that plug in to the 14-50s. It's important to ensure that the wire used to route from breaker to 14-50 outlet is of sufficient gauge to handle the anticipated current and that the breaker is no greater than 50 amps to protect the outlet/your house from fires.

The "high power wall chargers" use heavier gauge wire from panel to charger and have a larger breaker to accommodate the additional current draw. These wall-chargers are usually around $500 and have variable cost for installation depending on where you live, the condition of your panel, and how far you need to route from panel to the wall charger.

My recommendation is that you verify that the 14-50 outlet installed is suitable for up to 40A continuous (margin of safety) and start with the mobile charger, particularly if it's in your garage and you plan to park your EV in your garage. If you find that there are recurrent instances where you would benefit from a slightly higher charge rate of a high-power wall charger, get some quotes. We installed a HPWC for our Model Y outside as we keep our EV outside and wanted a more weather-proof solution.

Thank you this is very helpful. The electrician that installed the NEMA 14-50 knew i was installing for an EV. He stated at the time the 14-50 outlet was rated up to 50 AMPS and could go up to 60 AMP if hardwired. Not sure what gauge wire he used though.

I just installed a 50A Nema 14-50 in my garage. I had some extra 6 ga wire after I wired my hot tub and figured why not. So I will start there but will definitely consider upgrading when they have V2H chargers available.

@ColonelKurtz - if you’re lucky your electrician installed your outlet with 4 ga wire, if so you might be able to easily swap in the Rivian charger if you wanted so mostly just the cost of the charger ($500) and the cost of a quick visit by your electrician. With his statement that it could go to 60A if you want I would assume he installed 4 ga wire since 6 ga wire is only rated to 55A.

Disclaimer: I am not an electrician.

Alas, he used #6 gauge ran to a 50AMP circuit. I think I will just wait and try the level 2 plug 14-50 and see how it does. The electrician said he could always swap out to 60AMP breaker and hardwire the wall charger if I decide to go that route down the road.
