Team...think about this a little. No where in the traditional dealership model is customer ordering a vehicle encouraged or practiced. If you want ABC vehicle with XYZ options with paint color 1 you had only 2 choices....1) You have the dealer do a search with other dealerships in the local area that are willing to "trade" for the vehicle you want. Or 2) you ask and try to "order" your very specific vehicle. Dealerships discourage this (pre-pandemic) because they want your sale NOW, and don't want to take a chance on an order 4-8 weeks away.
So, with all that said Rivian, probably did not realize how complex and convoluted and how many possible build combinations could be ordered. Seriously, who'd want a Yellow R1T with FE interior? Or a Red Canyon with FE interior? This is why OEMS limit the build combos. So, after I saw this week in Plymouth, there are a lot of vehicles that are brand spanking new recently delivered to the former corporate address. But 100% of them are BM interior. I saw only 1 with a FE interior. Even saw 2 R1Ss there. One of those have the FE interior. That tells me Rivian is favoring BM interiors first. So, it is conceivable that if you wanted an R1T with BM interior with minimal options, they may have that truck laying around in Normal waiting for a buyer to "take" it. Think about it, all the posts from buyers are "if you want this color truck with this interior, you have to decide today". Essentially, this is a basic version of the "traditional dealership inventory" model.
So while we wait for our "custom" orders, I'll bet that Rivian in Normal is clearing inventory out that was either repaired in the plant, or they were manufacturing try out vehicles. They vehicles are probably being offered up to anyone who closely matches the build combo. So it is inevitable that some people could have a very short wait if they compromise what they want verses what they get.
