We have a little bit of information about when Rivian will start offering test drives to people.

Someone reached out to Rivian and they hold him that they will reveal the details of their test drive program "closer to the start of production." So that means we'll likely hear something in early 2021.

Hi Matt – Thanks for being in the Rivian family! We can't wait to get you behind the wheel of your Electric Adventure Vehicle. As you may have heard, our events are postponed due to COVID-19. While we haven't announced plans to provide attendees with rides during events, we look forward to sharing the details of our test drive program closer to the start of production! Stay tuned for updates.

Unfortunately this has been known for quite some time. The following has been on Rivian's website FAQ section since last year:

Do you offer test drives?

Not yet, but we can’t wait to get you behind the wheel. We’ll be offering test drives closer to our launch at the end of 2020
.

Which of course needs to be updated since the launch has been pushed into 2021 due to the pandemic and shutdown.

So based on the postings they're going have events in at least:
Miami, LA, New York City, Chicago, Irvine, Atlanta, Seattle, and San Francisco. There's also one for "Remote" so there seems to be more planned.

And, while the teams look to be BASED out of those cities, what I find exciting is—
Responsibilities
  • Participate in a 4-month traveling demonstration drive tour program
with emphasis on the Traveling. And—
Ability and willingness to travel 100% of contracted time inclusive of weekdays, weekends and holidays
Which IMO, means they will be coming to US with the vehicles— or at least fairly close, with any luck. Double hopefully with lots of colors to see in person in real light!! 😀

I think that's where the "remote" listing comes into play. I really hope they don't hover around those 8 cities for Americans and I also hope they're able to set up something for Canada as well.

I hear you. I have been wondering what the role of the “Remote Team” will be as well? Maybe “remote” means Canada! Seems like quite a stretch to task a single team with covering everything in the U.S. that’s NOT one of those 8 cities (and Canada!) 😳 I also take comfort in the heavy emphasis on an intense travel schedule in the job description. If they need to be traveling constantly, why would they stick close to a particular city? I’m thinking these teams may serve two purposes; be place holders until the experience centers are up and running, and help LE holders get enough info and confidence to finalize their reservations so Rivian can kick manufacturing into gear (Colors!). I did see a reference somewhere that the drive teams would be prioritized for LE reservations, at least to begin with. Are any LE’s slated for Canada?

I don't how many there were available but there are going to be LE's sent to Canada. Deliveries in Canada are starting later in November.

Rivian updated their site with test drive info. Their drive program will start in August in select cities to start. There will be opportunities for at home drives and drives at tour events.

We're kicking off our drive program in August — we can’t wait for you to get behind the wheel to experience the performance and handling of driving a Rivian. The first cities we’ll visit include Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Detroit and Seattle, with more announced soon.

Our drive program includes two types of experiences — at-home drives and tour events. For our at-home drives, simply schedule the date and time that’s most convenient, and we will bring the vehicle to you. You can choose an in-depth walkaround by one our team members or opt for a self-guided tour.

Rivian tour events are not only a great way to experience our vehicles, but an opportunity to meet fellow Rivian preorder holders as well. In addition to driving an R1, you can see our paint selections and interior choices in person while getting an up-close feel for our build quality and attention to detail. Our team will also be there to give demonstrations on everything from how features work and charging at home, to what you can expect during the ordering process.

Due to anticipated demand, we will prioritize preorder holders for our drive experiences. Look for more details in advance, including exact launch dates, our Covid-19 protocols and how we’ll handle reservations.
