I’m only two hours from Chicago in West Michigan, so I was excited to see this news from the Bloomington/Normal local newspaper:
Seems Rivian did not release the news, it was picked up from the Crain's Chicago Business report. Rivian is does even less PR than Tesla. At least Tesla has a mouth piece: Tesmanian Blog. I subscribed to the Pantagraph electronically for the past six months to get news about activity around Rivian plant, and even the local paper has had only a couple of stories about the rehab of the old auto plant.

Rivian job posting have been a good way to find out ahead of time. Its how the Chicago location was initially discovered along other possibilities in this thread: Rivian Retail & Service Center Locations

From Florida, looks like we have a choice of Chicago and D.C. Hopefully at least Atlanta will be added to the list soon. There was one story about a center being provided in the Normal factory area which may provide for custormer interaction. Rather not have to find any large city center to obtain service. Guess it is another case of just having to wait and see. Wait! Lot of that going on.

It's pretty clear that there's a lot going on behind the scenes (when was the last time you started an international automotive factory and charging infrastructure rollout?) but an "unveiling" closer to the actual start of production will have greater impact.

Florida is a sizeable market to get its own Rivian showroom, or at least somewhere closer to it. If not, I know Rivian wanted to roll out a white glove/concierge service where they will go to you. Inquire about it next time you reach out to their customer service team.

The ones in California and Chicago are going to be 2 of the 10 showrooms that Rivian plans to open this year.

Rivian, the EV startup, has announced that Chicago will be the second of its planned 10 retail locations. According to Crain's Chicago Business, the Windy City site is on W. Randolph Street in the Fulton Market neighborhood. It joins Laguna Beach, California, on the list of showroom sites the brand intends to open in 2021.

The retail locations offer customers chance to check out the Rivian R1T electric pickup and R1S electric SUV in person. They won't be dealerships, however, since Rivian is planning to sell directly to customers, with deliveries slated to begin this summer, with the R1T due out in June and the R1S coming in August. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe previously announced that the company plans to set up 41 service locations, which together with mobile service and over-the-air updates will handle maintenance and repairs for owners of the R1T and the R1S as well as for Rivian's Amazon delivery van.

Any news on when the LA retail location will be open?
I was in Laguna Beach on April 9th and there was nothing there indicating any progress. Did not even have a sign up about it coming so I would be surprised if they have this ready before the end of the year.

Not actually LA but not sure what other locations announced for SoCal.

Thanks for the information. I was hoping they would be open sometime this year so I could fly down from San Jose and see one and test drive. I ordered the 400 mile RT1, so I wouldn't get mine until next year. Hopefully they will open this year.

I had no idea it's going to be 3 floors.
They're a retail tenant. It's not all Rivian. When I first saw the news I assumed they purchased the building and were planning on keeping it as-is. Once the demolition started and the fencing was up it was clear that they were not the purchaser.

Ohh ok that makes a lot more sense. I didn't know that was the plan of the building.

Did a quick drive-by of the Chicago location this morning. There's been some incremental progress but my guess is at least 90 days from completion.
