Spare tire thoughts?

19490 Views 89 Replies 39 Participants Last post by  knitsud
I felt dumb when I discovered my truck didn't come with a spare. There's a well for storing it, but no spare.

Since I have to buy one, any thoughts on which wheel I should get? Rivian won't sell me one. I just bought a matching Pirelli tire, but would love a suggestion as to a cheap wheel that would do the job.

The fact that Rivian doesn't make this easy is disappointing. They refuse to tell me what sort of wheel they recommend!

Thanks.

Check your auto-insurance; mine will flatbed a truck or car 100 miles (usually get you to a TireRack supplied store) for $75.00 a year; I use Haggerty, who farms it out to someone else, but I don't worry about spares anymore, a can of tire fix if it's minor and if it's significant, I prefer the flatbed tow to somewhere they can get a replacement within a day at most.
I don't particularly appreciate changing tires on the roadside with little Billy zooming by at 85 mph on his cell phone. It gives you extra storage space and lower weight, and I always forgot to check the tire pressure on the spares until they were about rotted out. However, I can not remember my last flat tire for at least 20 years. Off-road, different story, but then you're going to need special jacks; it best to have a winch, bullbar, and brush guard, and RIvian claims their trucks are so great off-road, and I have seen the YouTube videos proofing it, but offers none of the above.

Note to CEO: Scratch the E bicycles, contract out some off-road accessories, and get that camp kitchen and truck bed cover on the shortlist.

many insurance companies report roadside claims to lexisnexis and consider them when re-rating policies…. So you can really screw yourself by using it.

imho, never bundle roadside with auto insurance.
Towing is a separate policy, with no bundling with your car insurance and 100 miles of flatbed service within 60 minutes. Plus some other benefits for the membership. However, they may not take Rivian's; I have a few classic cars, so they screen who is picking up your car, not Zeb from the local QuickTrip that owns a tow truck, No chains, just straps, etc.
