Someone else mentioned the benefit of doing a 5-wheel rotation regimen if you get the Rivian spare (so it matches the original ones). This allows you to get 20% more mileage out of the set of tires. Plus, it makes it more likely that the tire will be in better shape and fully inflated (although not really a concern with the onboard compressor) if it's part of the rotation. That alone sold me on getting the official spare (when I finally get my R1T).

I felt dumb when I discovered my truck didn't come with a spare. There's a well for storing it, but no spare.

Since I have to buy one, any thoughts on which wheel I should get? Rivian won't sell me one. I just bought a matching Pirelli tire, but would love a suggestion as to a cheap wheel that would do the job.

The fact that Rivian doesn't make this easy is disappointing. They refuse to tell me what sort of wheel they recommend!

Thanks.
you were given the option when you configured you truck.

We are huge longtime fans of fixaflat
Our Kona ev suffered a flat in the beltway while We were fancy suited for a friend’s wedding to which we were already late
I stripped into my jeans and t shirt, wife and I scrambled to install spare then discovered they instead supply a mini compressor and in line canister of high grade Dunlop solution -
Got us to next exit where we bought a large fixaflat
Faster than changing a wheel and far less work
We’re going to see about one of these in line kits for the T.
We’re keeping the wheel well available for its function as a cooler and later the supplemental battery that fits there.
Way too much usable space for things other than a doomsday spare we’re likely never to need.
Ok naysayers what if it’s a sidewall…..
THAT is an ever rarer case.
We made it to the affair in time to meet, greet, and eat, as well as the cigar and cordial bar, and gourmet creamery truck .
That kind of thinking gets these types of items too.

1; why do I need a bigger battery?

2; why do i need a back up Battery or generator for my house?

3; why do I need off road tires?

I do feel that Rivian should treat it’s buyers better and can’t think of a reason for either not selling you a spare, or for not recommending something to you, however, the last time I actually had to use a spare tire was sometime around 1979. I was going to get a full size spare, but then I watched one of the Rivian Stories guy’s video of removing the spare and changed my mind. Changed my configuration, and plan to get a good tire repair kit on the off-chance my 40-year run of flat-free driving goes bad.

I'm currently sitting in a Les Schwab this morning to get a tire repaired. I picked up a screw at some point over the last week or so. I have come to learn a few things about this that hopefully will be helpful to others.

First, there is no jack provided with the vehicle if you don't also get the spare tire. This may seem somewhat expected but the jack and specific adapter provided with the jack is the only way to lift a corner of the vehicle safely to remove a flat tire - even if you are just going to run that in to get repaired.

I'm not sure how AAA would handle a flat tire out on the road but I would guess that they likely don't have a jack that is designed for the specific hole on the R1T (page 181 in the manual).

In my case, I'm waiting to get the truck into an open bay to fix the tire. I put the truck in max ride height and will put it in spare tire mode before they pull it in. They will need to remove the underbody panels and then use rubber pads so they don't damage the underchassis when they lift (page 183-185). There has been mention of a specific "disc" that is needed between a lift and the underbody but it appears that a rubber pad may work also.

I'm hoping my spare comes soon so I at least have the proper jack to lift it with if I need it again.

Having the pucks and a spare tire are important. EV’s are very heavy and because of that that absolutely do get more flat tires. I have had 5 already on my Tesla.

Do you plan to go off roading often? Just curious because most EVs don’t come with a spare traditionally. Not only have I never needed a spare in the last 4 EVs I’ve owned in the past 8 years, I’ve only ever had to mount a spare tire once in driving for 25 years. I am not ordering mine with a spare.
Do you have a roadside tire repair kit that you recommend? Fix-a-flat, plugs, etc?

Nice anecdote but 100% baseless. By that reasoning trucks and buses should be getting flats all the time. And your F150 should get as many flats as your Tesla. For completely obvious reasons it's the tires that matter, given the same environment.

Congrats. You must be very very lucky.
I have worried about never having a spare on the S, I have some kind of tesla kit to use a plug and pump up the tire if it goes flat. Teslas are really heavy compared to most cars. But of course rivian is in its own category almost, probably more than double the s. I wonder what the lifespan of the Rivian tires will be, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't lower with that huge weight. Everyone talks about range on the different tires. I got the 20" a/t. What's the lifespan?? My spare is back ordered, but at ~$400 I think per tire, that's also about double what my S tires cost at costco.

I was told by my guide I can get my truck without the full size spare in 6-8 weeks, and have no ability to get a full sized spare from Rivian at all (in addition to changing to a more available tire option) or get back in the queue (4-5 months). No delayed spare delivery option, or plans to make it available in the shop.
