the 180 kWh "megapack" battery explained

If you're wondering how durable Rivian's 180 kWh "megapack" battery pack really is, these facts I learned from teslarati will clear up a lot of questions:
  • 80% more energy than Tesla’s flagship Model S and Model X
  • 11,000 lbs towing capacity
  • undisclosed battery supplier
  • holds up to well to extreme conditions
  • battery algorithms for a tailored experience
  • 864 cells
  • cold plate for thermal management
  • 25% denser than any other battery (saving weight)
  • carbon fiber and ‘ballistic shield’ for protection from impacts and weather
  • 400+ miles

Since the overall range is so high, I think the hits that are typically seen in extreme temperatures will just have less impact. What could Rivian really have done to prevent this range loss that hasn't been attempted by other automakers already?

The only real solution that won't require pissing off company share holders is overshooting range beyond what consumers actually need till more climate friendly technology comes around.
Batteries will never fare well in extreme temperatures and even top of the line technology found in e-motorsports is still trying to work around overheating issues. Plenty of people driving their EV's year round, you just have to plan accordingly.

You forgot to mention Rivian's extensive use of "unobtanium" in their Max Battery Package, reportedly the primary reason it's not offered on the R1S . . . .

What performance penalty will the max pack experience? What is the weight increase over the standard battery and how much storage is lost ? Will 0-60 time increase with this weight? Will the truck handle differently with this weight and CG change?

Since Rivian uses the skateboard platform I don't think the center of gravity will change much because of how flat it is. Weight will be interesting to see because Rivian hasn't shared a whole lot about how much their vehicles will weight with the different batteries. When they sent a R1T to the Rebelle Rally they used the 135 kWh batter but I don't know if that had to with weight or performance or just because they didn't have a 180 kWh battery available yet.

Are you planning on getting the 180 kWh battery @RVAir?
I would like the 180 kWh pack if it does not hobble performance or driving feel.
