The Holy Grail Of AWD Systems | Rivian R1T

Engineering Explained turned a couple of conversations with one of Rivian's chief engineers into this video breaking down the AWD system. It's well worth the watch, much like the rest of his videos.

Another great breakdown by Engineering Explained. The stuff about the system being able to determine the surface friction in any condition is fascinating.

Is it, though? Rivian engineers have admitted there are scenarios the system doesn't (can't) handle as well as mechanical AWD systems driven by a single motor. For example, much more spin is necessary for the system to "detect" the spin, and respond.

So Rivian is saying they have the best AWD system…. Just like Subaru, Audi, toyota, Land Rover, VW, MB, Honda,…. And pretty much every other company with AWD.

Every video I’ve seen of a rivian off-road or on snow they have a ton of wheel spin. Wheel spin is the enemy of traction in almost every situation. I believe a 4 wheel electric system will get there one day but don’t think we are close to there yet.
