EV charging needs a rethink: Add chargers to highway rest areas - Autoblog

When on a road trip, having EV chargers, restaurants and other services at highway rest areas would be handy. But first, we have to change federal law.

The state dot's have a lot of discretion with regard to rest areas. Just look at how many that have been closed in the past decade. Politians do not want their states competing with private enterprise at the interchanges. So good luck with chargers in rest areas. The toll roads are a little different, keeping motorists on the tollway is a good thing for them. Hence, service centers have service stations, restaurants, etc.

Good point. At least with the way things are now with EVs, it just takes a little extra planning to make sure you don't run out of juice. Like this guy that covered 11,000 miles in 46-day a road trip across America. This Man Took His All-Electric Porsche Taycan on 46-Day Road Trip Across America. Here’s What Happened.

I agree with your assessment. I don't need chargers in town, will do all charging at home, but for those longer road trips!!! I live in Ontario Canada and am super disappointed in our government latest announcement installing lv 3 at rest stops along our major highways. Sounds like a great announcement until u see details and the lv 3 chargers are 50kW and 150kW. Our government here is frustratingly behind on this much needed infrastructure. Sometimes I wish I could just love a Tesla and be done with it!!! (but I just can't ;))

Ivy, ONroute and Canadian Tire put a big charge into road trips - ONroute

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers will soon be able to charge at all ONroute locations along the province’s busiest highways, thanks to an agreement between Ivy Charging Network and ONroute and its partners, Canadian Tire Corporation(CTC) and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

Beside absolutely zero incentives for EV's in Ontario, this lack of investment in infrastructure will mean my R1T won't have too many BEV friends out there, except for all those Tesla's!

I like the idea of adding charging stations to roadside rest areas, particularly here in California where everyone is beating the drum for going electric. But help me understand how federal law impacts a state adding EV charging to a highway department roadside rest area? I don't dispute what you're saying; I just need your help here.

Also a lack of gas stations at highway rest areas and for the same reason, just not the best place. The chargers, like the gas stations, fast food spots and other road services are located at exits. On 50 mile ride home when I need a charge, I'll pull into the Jimmie Johns for sandwich and drink, drive a 100 yards to the charger plug in and eat and charge.

That part on federal law wasn't exactly clear to me either but someone mentioned that most rest stations are state owned. If true, then that will really help propel things as EV friendly states set the example:

"Most rest stations in the USA are owned by the state. As such, it's state land. Hence no commerce that isn't totally owned or sanctioned by the state. If the state allows EV charging at rest stations, then they must allow gas stations, then restaurants, then quick service groceries...and now it's no longer a "rest" station....it's an aggravated pain station that should be avoided at all costs!"

I can emphatize on Tesla though am glad i got it back in December. So i like it now especially with the gas price these days. 8) I still am undecided if I’ll use it as a trade-in once my R1T is ready - maybe will depend on how much Rivian will give me for it.

Have you already started to assess the value of your Tesla? With gas prices so high, new and used EV prices are bound to increase.

Kind of like house buying. Your house is worth a lot but it costs more to buy another one.

PS Not sure if you know but there is a boat line called North River popular in the PNW. Be cool to be towing a North River with a Rivian.

That's true but not so bad if you're buying new and can get the dealer to commit to MSRP.

I'd like to see more chargers with pullthroughs. Now that more ev's have higher towing capabilities. I don't think want to unhook my trailer, charge, and then hook the trailer back on.

Good point! I had the same thoughts earlier as i was looking for a travel trailer. I dont see that happening (yet) though. I’ll be glad to find a charging location where i can easily parked my trailer while i plug-in.
