I am getting plenty of range with my Tesla MYP charging to 70%, but R1T almost got me stranded. I've been charging to 70%. Is there harm to going to 85 percent? Its an option on the app.

thanks

I am charging to 85% while I am out on the road(last 4 months), unless the RV park allows us to charge off my RV. In that case, as well as at home, I stick to 70%.

I always charge up to 85%, always was doing it with my 3 different previous teslas, and do the same now with r1t. No issues
I charge to 85% or 100% whenever I am road tripping before the weekend, and know that I will need to hit a DCFC a 2 or 3 hours down the road. Rest of the time for normal usage 70%.
I charge to 70% daily. 85% only if I know I need the extra ~50 miles AND that will prevent me from having to stop and charge. If I'm going to have to stop and charge, anyway, then I stick with 70%.

Question: Why not tow the R1T behind your RV & with Regen on, it should charge for free?

  1. Rivian does not condone tow-charging, at this time. So that's reason enough not to do it, outside of an emergency, imo.
  2. If you decided to do it anyway, actual tow-charging would need to be done at lower speeds -- not typical highway speeds.
  3. Tow-charging is far less efficient than charging from the grid or even a generator. The drag on the RV would cause abysmal fuel economy (way worse than using that fuel for a generator).

70% unless I need to go further. At that time, I charge to 100% or whatever in between. On a road trip, I start with 100%, because that's when you're most likely to go the furthest before needing to stop.
