Seems like I can configure those wheels on all the other editions, but not the Launch edition. Anyone know why?

Also can we talk about how they are $1700 more for a color change? Why?

Not sure but I contacted support 2 days ago to ask them if the option would be available later, since I would much rather have the Black wheels. I have yet to receive a response though.

As far as a 'color' change - it's more than that. They aren't just spray painted black. They are likely powder coated and then finished with some sort of scratch-resistant finish. The base rims are just straight up cast metal - no special process to manufacture them. That's why there is a price premium.

Agree on the process, I would also prefer the black rims even fore the premium, I can't understand why you can't order the R1T LE 20 inch wheels for the R1S LE.....its the same chassis

I asked Customer Engagement on Thursday if the black rims would be available and they said I was not the first person to ask, so the answer was not, "no". It sounds like they are gathering information from emails, chats and phone calls to gauge what accessories/options they need to tweak for availability. Hopefully they can use info from these sources to update the website as well, to help prevent an excessive amount of contact with random questions.

Glad you said that. I have am waiting to hear back on whether or not we can put the Launch Edition R1T 20" wheels on a Launch Edition R1S. I much prefer the R1T wheels to either of the 20" options of the R1S. Maybe if they get enough interest, they will offer all options but who knows.

I asked customer service on chat the other day and they said they had "no plans of adding the black 20" wheels as an option for the LE". Sad day.

I got this response:

Thank you for reaching out to us and for being a member of our preorder community! At this time, the dark wheel options are only available with the selection of the Adventure and Explore packages. The Launch Edition will come with the 20", 21" and 22" standard wheel option at no additional cost. I am in contact with the respective teams to see if the dark wheel option will be available in the future.

Feel free to reach out anytime with any additional thoughts or questions. We can't wait to get you behind the wheel next year!

Stay adventurous,
Justin

Just got this from Rivian Support:

Thanks for contacting us previously about the dark wheel option within the configuration tool. Good news, the dark wheel option will soon be available for Launch Edition reservation holders! While the details such as pricing and timing of the option have yet to be finalized, we will surely be in contact with you when it becomes available. Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions!

Your fellow adventurer,
Justin

If you look closely at the R1T 20” wheel options in the Configurator, you’ll notice that the “dark” wheel is a completely different wheel, not just a black version of the std 20” wheel. CS told me that the dark wheel “uses different alloys” than the std one, but they didn’t have any additional details. To me, it’s a far better looking wheel, especially on a white or black truck.

The dark 20" wheel looks like it came from the R1S. I'd prefer a dark wheel, but IMO the R1T 20" wheel looks so much better than the R1S 20's.
