Has Rivian explained how they will take trade-ins from customers? Or if they will accept trade-ins at all?

Since they're using a direct sales model Tesla, maybe they'll do something similar to what Tesla does?

This is from the Tesla website:

TRADE-INS

What kind of vehicles does Tesla accept for trade-in?

Tesla accepts cars, trucks, vans and SUVs for trade-in towards the purchase of a new or used Tesla. Use the Tesla trade-in calculator to obtain a quote on your current vehicle.

How does Tesla determine the price of my vehicle?
All Tesla trade values are generated out of a standard calculation based on vehicle configuration, history, mileage and age. The resulting value is based on market data and internal Tesla product knowledge. Non-Tesla trade-in values are based solely on Kelley Blue Book (KBB) good condition trade values (pending vehicle history verification).

How does the trade-in process work?
To get a trade-in value before ordering your new or used Tesla, go to the Tesla trade-in calculator to submit your current vehicle information. After you place an order on a new or used Tesla, you may submit trade-in details in your Tesla Account.

Can I trade in my vehicle even though I am still making payments?
Yes. You can trade in your vehicle if you are still making finance payments. Tesla will calculate and compare the payoff amount, applicable early termination penalty and any equity (positive or negative) that will be added to your Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement. You will not need to pay off your lease or loan in full prior to trading in your current vehicle. There may be restrictions on accepted leased trade-ins depending on the lessor.

Can I trade in more than one vehicle towards my new Tesla purchase?
Tesla cannot accept more than one trade-in vehicle towards your new or used vehicle purchase. You can apply the equity of one trade-in towards the purchase contract.

Can I apply the value of my trade-in vehicle to the total purchase of my Tesla?
You can apply any applicable positive equity towards the purchase of your new or used Tesla. If you have negative equity, it must be paid either at delivery or rolled into your purchase agreement (pending credit approval).

How long are trade-in values valid?
Trade-in values on all vehicles are valid for 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Does Tesla accept salvaged title or non-drivable vehicles?
No. All trade-ins are expected to be in drivable condition and all values are subject to change if the vehicle has any major mechanical or cosmetic concerns.

Will Tesla accept a trade-in without a vehicle title?
You must have a vehicle title for the car you wish to trade in if you own the vehicle outright, or if you are making finance payments in KY, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, NY, OK or WY.

When can a vehicle be traded in?
All trade-ins must be dropped-off at your scheduled delivery appointment. Tesla cannot accept trade-ins prior to or post-delivery.

What happens to my trade-in if I decide to return my Tesla?
All trade-ins are final. If you decide to take advantage of Tesla's seven day return policy, you will receive a check for the full equity of your trade-in vehicle in addition to a refund for your new car. If you had negative equity on your trade, you may need to pay an additional amount.

How do aftermarket vehicle modifications affect trade-in valuations?
Aftermarket vehicle modifications typically have a negative effect on trade-in valuations. The car you wish to trade in should ideally be in ‘stock’ or original state.

It's my understanding the partnership with Cox Automotive ($350m investment into Rivian) will be handling or assisting in many aspects of the vehicle purchase process including trade-ins. Unfortunately there is no "official" statement or website text to point to yet. It's anticipated / expected this information will become available when Rivian makes their online order configurator available this late summer to early 3Q.

So does that mean there's going to be brick and mortar facilities to actually bring your trade-in and/or Rivian to?

Have no idea how Rivian / Cox Automotive plans on organizing this and I doubt anybody on this forum does at this point. Again, Rivian has not released any official information. Have you submitted your question(s) to Rivian? If not, I would encourage you to. Nothing like getting answers straight from the horse's mouth ... and then you can share with the rest of the class. ;)

Rivian has added some more information on their support site about trade-ins.

How do trade-ins work?
A trade-in is used as a credit towards your new Rivian.

Rivian will make a trade-in offer during our online ordering process. We accept most makes and models of vehicles as trade-in, though some may require manual review.

These decisions are determined by a combination of user-supplied information, market value and vehicle history. Rivian will collect your trade-in vehicle on delivery day.

Can I trade-in a vehicle that I’m still making payments on?
Yes. Once received, Rivian will pay off your outstanding loan balance. Any applicable positive equity will be applied to the purchase, and any negative equity must be settled with Rivian at the time of delivery.

If your vehicle is currently leased, Rivian is unable to accept your vehicle as a trade-in.

How many of you see yourselves going through this trade-in program? A real concern will be trade-in value and if they'll give us back enough. Selling privately might be the way I go.

One reason to consider going through Rivian may depend on your state's taxation model. Here in MA, for example, you pay sales tax on the cost of the new vehicle minus the value of the trade-in. Of course, you still may do better selling your old vehicle privately, but the sales tax here is 6.25% - so trading in a $25,000 vehicle will effectively shave another $1,562.50 in sales tax off the final bill for your Rivian.

Yep, and here in WA where the sales tax is a whole 10% (or even slightly more locally), it can definitely encourage you to trade in. Plus time and hassle... If after the net sales tax is considered I'm only behind $500 doing a trade-in, it's just not worth the hassle of listing private party. But it all really comes down to price. If the trade in offer is really crappy, it could be worth the time.

Rivian shared some info recently about the sales process including trade-ins. They'll collect the trade-in on the delivery dates and will accept most makes and models. I'd be curious what kinds of cars they wouldn't take but I doubt that'll be an issue.
