Rivian has begun real-world testing of its upcoming R2 compact SUV, marking a significant milestone ahead of the vehicle’s scheduled 2026 launch. Production-intent prototypes are now undergoing trials across public roads and rugged terrain throughout North America, as the electric vehicle maker collects data to refine performance, durability and user comfort.

While pre-production vehicles are typically camouflaged to conceal final design elements, Rivian is taking a creative approach with nature-inspired wraps that double as both concealment and brand expression. “We wanted to wrap the R2 in nature and have it feel alive, dynamic, and a little mysterious—almost like a children’s storybook,” said Jonathan Szczupak, Rivian’s Senior Director of Exterior Design, in an interview with Rivian Stories.

Though the R2 has already been unveiled, Szczupak noted the camouflage still serves a purpose, allowing flexibility in ongoing design adjustments. He also hinted that the wraps may include hidden Easter eggs, with fans already expressing interest in seeing the designs offered as an option on production models. “Never say never,” he said.

The R2 is a critical part of Rivian’s strategy to broaden its customer base beyond the premium segment targeted by its R1T pickup and R1S SUV. Designed as a more compact and affordable electric SUV, the R2 is expected to feature Rivian’s in-house developed Maximus drive units, battery cells supplied by LG Energy Solution, and a new software architecture aimed at boosting performance and lowering production costs.

To prepare for production, Rivian is expanding its Normal, Illinois factory and investing $120 million in a supplier park to support the R2’s assembly lines. With development accelerating, the R2 remains central to Rivian’s efforts to scale up and capture a larger share of the growing EV market.
