The Rivian wall charger is $800. The Tesla wall connector is $420 (LOLs). Other than not giving money to Elon, what's my motivation for getting the Rivian product instead of the far cheaper Tesla product?

The Tesla universal wall connector with built in J1772 adapter is still less at $650. Though I'd probably get a NACS connector and just use the $50 adapter and save $180.

The Grizzl-E is a very well-built EVSE by our neighbors to the north and I ordered one when I my Rivian last year. Unfortunately, it has a design issue that makes hard-wiring properly difficult, bordering on impossible: the connectors used in the unit are not a standard size, and I was not able to find them to use. Since I was reluctant not to use connectors (the 15-50P pigtail that it comes from the factory with uses them, and I did not want to use bare wire), I wound up returning the unit.

Its replacement was an Emporia, designed in the US but built in India. It is not as well constructed as the Grizzl-E, but gets good reviews, and in my experience, works very well. Emporia support is US-based and on the two occasions I've had to contact them (both for wifi issues, not EVSE operation), the help has been timely and knowlegeable. The price is now in the $430 range, and though I paid a bit less when I bought mine last year, would still rate it as good value for that money.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no advantage of the Rivian product compared to the Tesla Wall Connector (which is a very reliable and robust unit at a good price). And it's built right here in the US of A.

It seems to me that people who aspire to "not give money to Elon" are just doing some kind of far-left virtue signaling. I mean, as if Tesla is somehow a bad corporation for reasons that can't be disclosed, LOL! Shhhh, don't tell anyone...

IMHO, voting (or showing your displeasure) with your $$$ is not in anyway far-left signaling. Nor is it labelling the Tesla corporation as bad. It is a very effective way to tell Elon to focus on running his company and keep his fascist dreams to himself.

I have a 3rd gen Tesla wall connector. However it was sending 3 red blinks followed by green stream .. it would still charge but at a reduced rate. I thought it was with just my Rivian but turns out the model y had same issue when charging. I got Tesla to diagnose the wall connector and it had an internal fault and I would need to replace it as a result. It has a 4 year warranty and It’s been 5 years. Tesla did say they recommend buying the universal wall connector because at times using a 3 party adapter has been known to cause problems with the wall connector. So even though I already have a Tesla tap mini .. I went with the universal Tesla wall connector ..

Thank you. And specifically the two I asked about. And it appears no one can give me a technical reason to buy the Rivian wall charger instead of the Tesla.

That's really a shame because I'd prefer to put money into Rivian but damn that thing is so expensive. I can't even say it looks better, or matches the aesthetics of my garage or something.

I've had a number of issues with the Rivian wall EVSE, so I don't recommend it. They are all about the same, so I'd just buy whatever is cheap with good reviews. That's what I did with my EV motorcycle, and picked up a 32A portable for $100 shipped. Works fine. I was given the Rivian EVSE, but otherwise would never pay for it.
